From 5 to 7 June 2024, researchers from Germany, Switzerland, the UK and the USA discussed the history of human genetics in Germany and its international connections.
The conference Tracing Knowledge on Human Heredity: New Perspectives on the History of Human Genetics in the FRG, organised by Lukas Alex and Isabel Heinemann from the Chair of Contemporary History, brought together researchers from the fields of contemporary history, history of medicine and science, science and technology studies, sociology and political science and facilitated an intensive, interdisciplinary exchange.
The central themes of the conference included human genetic research and counselling practices in the second half of the 20th century. In addition to a knowledge-historical approach, the participants also discussed other research approaches, such as oral history, in order to be able to summarise the history of the discipline more precisely.
