Gender, Power Relations, and the State

This research network investigates the tensions between the guiding concepts of gender, power relations, and the state. These tensions are visible in the gendered dynamics of formal and informal practices of (state) power and domination. The projects cover interactions between medializations, social practices, and normative framings in the attribution and negotiation of gendered (state) power in the process of historical change from the early modern period to the present. This interdisciplinary network consists of scholars from the disciplines of literary and cultural studies, media studies, history, political science, art history, and psychology. It is located at the Center for Gender Studies and Feminist Futures at the University of Marburg, but also includes scholars from the Herder Institute for Historical Research on Eastern Central Europe - Institute of the Leibniz Association, from the Justus Liebig University of Giessen, and from the Westphalian Wilhelms University of Münster. A Flexi Funds application will be submitted in March 2021. The long-term goal is to establish a DFG research group.
The following members of the Center for Gender Studies and Feminist Futures are involved in the research network: Prof. Dr. Carmen Birkle (American Studies), Prof. Dr. Annette Henninger und Dr. Dorothee Beck (both Political Science), Prof. Dr. Helga Krüger-Kirn (Educational Studies), Prof. Dr. Hania Siebenpfeiffer and Lea Reiff (both Modern German Literature), Prof. Dr. Inken Schmidt-Voges (Early Modern History), Prof. Dr. Sabine Mecking (History of the State of Hesse).
Seitens der WWU wirkt Prof. Dr. Isabel Heinemann an den Aktivitäten und Antragstellungen des Netzwerks mit. Gemeinsam mit Prof. Dr. Annette Henninger, Philipps Universität Marburg, entwickelt sie das Projekt Grenzen des staatlichen Gewaltmonopols? Geschlechtsbasierte Gewalt in der Familie im langen 20. Jahrhundert, welches geschlechtsbasierte Gewalt in der Familie und ihre staatlichen Rahmung aus politikwissenschaftlicher und zeithistorischer Perspektive untersucht. In der ersten Förderphase liegt der Fokus auf der Zeit nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg und dem innerdeutschen Vergleich. Für die zweite Förderphase ist ein Vergleich mit den USA geplant, die sowohl für die politische Ordnung der Nachkriegszeit als auch für Frauenbewegungen in Deutschland eine wichtige Referenz darstellt.
